Grupo Navemar is pleased to announce that, on October 8th, it launched the pilot route Puerto Chiapas-Puerto Quetzal, as part of short-sea shipping between Mexico and Guatemala. This service was operated with our vessel M/V Aries, a multipurpose vessel with a nominal capacity of 446 TEUs, flying the Mexican flag and operating on the Pacific coast, offering cabotage services between Mexican ports.
Short Sea Shipping (SSS), also known in other places as Short Sea Shipping, encompasses virtually all maritime traffic originating from or destined for non-transoceanic locations and offers the possibility of creating multimodal logistics chains, as a competitive, economical and environmentally friendly transport solution, with fast and efficient routes for foreign trade.
In the TMCD we can find that fuel consumption per ton-km can be reduced up to six times and therefore CO2 emissions up to 5 times; another advantage of using short sea shipping instead of road transport.
This route, operated by the MV Aries and with Navemar as the Mexican shipping company, has high potential that will foster regional development. For Mexico, it will particularly boost the southeast region, with a significant increase in the exchange of goods, which will increase demand for port services and provide an opportunity for new businesses that will facilitate the development of both countries and the maritime sector in Mexico.
This is how port operations are carried out for the general cargo that will travel in the holds of the MV Aries
