With the delivery of the Great Lagos, which took place at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. in Ulsan (South Korea), the Grimaldi Group's fleet officially includes two Con-Ro G5 class multipurpose units.
The new vessel is named after the city of Lagos, Nigeria. Its port has been served for decades by the Neapolitan shipping company on its maritime routes between Europe, North and South America, and West Africa. Furthermore, the Grimaldi Group currently operates the largest multipurpose Ro-Ro terminal in West Africa there.
With a length of 250 meters, a beam of 38 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 45,684 tons, the design of the Great Lagos is the result of a study of the Group's and its customers' needs. G5-class vessels are capable of transporting 4,700 linear meters of roll-on/roll-off cargo, 2,500 CEUs (cargo equivalent units), and 2,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). Compared to the previous G4 class, the new vessels have the same roll-on/roll-off cargo capacity, while their container capacity is double.
In addition to its cargo capacity, the Great Lagos stands out for its numerous state-of-the-art technological solutions designed to increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Both the main engine and the auxiliary diesel generators will comply with the NOx levels imposed by Tier III regulations, while the propulsion system integrated between the rudder and propeller will minimize vortex losses and, consequently, optimize propulsion efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
